The pair’s love for each other is so palpable that it’s hard to imagine a relationship that didn’t have its ups and downs.
In The Great Gift, they explore why this is the case in their life, their relationship and the world at large.
It all begins in December 2019 when Lenny returns from a week-long vacation and finds his girlfriend’s house deserted.
“It is almost like the first time you saw her in her bedroom,” James explains.
“And you realise you have never left her room in a million years.”
After a night of drinking and brawling, James and his girlfriend return to their home.
“It was just one of those nights where you just thought, ‘Oh, this is what life is like.'”
As the years pass, James’ relationship with his girlfriend deteriorates and their friendship slowly unravels.
“I remember thinking, ‘What the hell is going on?’ and ‘What’s going on with my girlfriend?'”
“We just went through a huge rollercoaster of feelings.
I thought, this could be it.
I was so worried, I was in so much turmoil.”
James and Lizzy had always been close, but things turned sour when James told Lenny that Lenny had cheated on him and Lizzie had been jealous of him.
“She told me that she hated me,” James recalls.
But it didn’t work. “
And it just took everything I had to try and make it work.”
But it didn’t work.
The pair were able to work through the issues and have a better relationship, but it didn?t solve the underlying issues.
“The thing that really hurt was when Lizzy said to me, ‘I hate you.
You’ve made me hate you, and I love you and we’ll never be the same.’
I thought that that was a really big lie,” James said.
“But it was really true.”
It wasn?t until this year, in November 2019, that James and co-writer Lizzy finally had a happy ending.
“We got through the whole thing and realised that we were actually OK,” James says.
This was a pivotal year for the duo. “
In the end, we were so happy, we went out for dinner, and it just turned out that we really got through it together.”
This was a pivotal year for the duo.
“When we did this, I don’t think anyone would have believed us.
I think there was probably only one person who thought we were OK,” Lizzy recalls.
“There was no doubt in my mind that we had a relationship, and we were together for life.
It?s a great feeling.
I don?t think anyone could have guessed at the depth of love we have for each others’ souls.”
James also admits he had to work on some of his issues with his marriage.
“There was a lot of emotional baggage that we dealt with and we dealt through it,” he said.
James and coauthor Lizzy share their best advice for people who are struggling with their relationship.
We don’t always know what the truth is.
The truth is that we love each other.
We love you.
We’re here to support each other and get through whatever is on your mind, whatever is going through your head.
So please don?ve judge your partner by their appearance.
It can be embarrassing.
I can?t blame them for wanting a quick fix.
And it should be the case.
There should be no fear in the world, no anxiety.
It should be like a beautiful sunshine.
James and James have a wonderful, hilarious and poignant story of love and loss, as well as friendship, family and love of friends.
